August 27th was a special day on the trip that didn’t get much love.
It was the two year mark from our first date (first successful date, anyway) and we spent it sanding over-sized doors and learning how to make tzatziki at our Greece Helpx. Neither of us were complaining but being just a short ferry ride away from one of the prime romantic locations in the world, it seemed criminal not to indulge.
Our Helpx host, Theo, encouraged us to take a few days off to enjoy the famous Greek islands and we gladly packed our bags to set off for a mini vacation in Santorini to celebrate, none other than, US!
We cozied up in a nice hostel just a five minutes walk from the black sand beaches along the south eastern coast of the island. We enjoyed five days in Santorini and the majority were spent on the beach picnicking with wine, cheese and olives.
We enjoy the simple (and inexpensive) life.
It was perfect.
But you can’t visit Santorini without venturing through Oia and Fira; the two picturesque towns whose vantage points of the sea and volcano have made the island so famous. A path between the two towns allows visitors to walk from Fira to Oia, while both enjoying beautiful views of the coastline and burning a few calories.
The hike (although I don’t know that we’d describe it as a hike since most of the track is paved) takes about five hours and involves a lot of up and down, but there’s not a moment that goes by without breathtaking landscape to appreciate.
It’s hard to get tired when every 30 seconds you’re stopping to take pictures.
We were rewarded at the end of our hike with a fantastic Greek meal and famous Santorini Sunset.
I’m looking forward to many more sunsets with this handsome travel partner of mine.
