One of the most magnificent hikes that we encountered throughout our month in New Zealand was the Tongariro Alpine Crossing. The Alpine Crossing is a segment of the well known Tongariro Northern Circuit, which is also one of nine premier tracks in New Zealand better known as The Great Walks. The Alpine Crossing features most of the scenic highlights from the Northern Circuit but takes a fraction of the time (six hours versus four days!).
As a walking track in New Zealand, you are not just handed the title of Great Walk… you most definitely earn it. Tongariro earned its title with dramatic volcanic landscapes, craters, glacial valleys, alpine meadows and emerald colored lakes.
Words can hardly describe the awe-inspiring landscapes… so I will let Chris’ Nikon do the talking. Enjoy!
It’s hard to believe the lakes are truly that blue!
(The last eruption was in 2012… which was really comforting)
Being speechless is quite alright with me.
